Dear Patty, first of all could you introduce yourself?
Of course Bernie!
My name is Patty van Delft, I am a Dutch author of both Young Adult Fantasy novels and Dark Poetry. I write my poetry under the name ‘Just Patty’.
Why the name ‘Just Patty’? Because writing poetry is a naked reflection of the heart and soul, nothing more and nothing less.
It’s ‘Just Me’ without decorations.
I started writing poetry after my big brother was murdered when I was 14 to find a way to express my feelings and to deal with the emptiness he left inside of me.
But it wasn’t until 2013 when I started to actually publishing my poems on a blog.
Before, I just never had the courage to share my deepest and mostly dark feelings with anyone.
I was just writing to save my sanity. (can’t say that worked though lol) ;)
But I got so much support that I started to write more and more. And I am loving it!
Before I started to write dark poetry, the darkness was already inside of me. Always lurking right beneath the surface, waiting until I lost my strength so it could consume me. Depression, nightmares, flashbacks, they are no strangers to me.
But because I let it out now every once in a while by writing, I was able to tame the beast and be the person who I am today. Me, without restrictions or suppression.
At the same time that I started to blog my poems, I also wrote a Dutch young adult fantasy novel that got published in April 2014 in Holland and won the third price for Best Fantasy Novel 2014.
Now, I have three published books in my name, Drägan Duma and two poetry books called ‘My Wings’ and ‘My Whisperings’.
I make the artwork that goes along with my poetry myself. The model you see is me. I take most of the photos and edit them as well. This way, I can combine two of my greatest passions: writing and photographing!
Do you remember the first poetry that you read or heard ?
This would be ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allan Poe.
Who is your favorite Poet ?
I have always being attracted to the more darker forms of poetry, I adore Edgar Allan Poe. Maybe because dark poetry seems to be more raw and the emotions can hit you like a rock.
How and when (day or Night?) do you have your inspiration for your poems?
I can write day and night. The inspiration for my poems is always flowing. Sometimes it can be just a word I hear somewhere, or an event that I see happening. Most of my poetry, however, is based on things I had to go through in my past or am still going through now. I have lost a lot of people close to me, witnessed some things you don’t want to see, been abused and have three chronical conditions, one of them being PTSD.
I have a rather turbulent life and the scars to prove it, I guess you can say. At least it’s never boring ;)
But nighttime is definitely my favorite time to write. It’s quiet and peaceful at night.
I also like to write to support people who have a rough time. Although my poetry is mostly dark, I like to believe there’s also always a ray of light to find within my writings.
Could we have a specific poem to conclude this interview?
This is one of my favorite poems from my new poetry book ‘My Whisperings’:
Soft and gentle
They escape my unwilling lips
Like a tiny waterfall
One last call
Words from the heart
Like a soft summer rain
Little drops of love
From my trembling lips
Against my will
Just four little words
‘I love you still’
