Le trame del mondo – Interlacement

Over twenty contemporary tapestries

The project, curated by Raffaella Salato, is composed of over twenty contemporary tapestries produced between 2010 and 2016. The predominantly large scale pieces are in dialogue with smaller works establishing polyptych conversations amongst themselves.  Also incorporated are preparatory drawings allowing the viewer exclusive insight into the creative process of this refined and unique artist.

Tania Welz

Tania Welz, German by birth but Roman by choice, interprets the world around her through material and color. She then applies her talent in an expressive, powerful, and original way: abstract tapestry. Much like painters using brush strokes to illustrate their inner motives, the artist chooses material mediums (jute, silk, cotton, velvet, wool) which she then tears, unravels, burns, mends, and assembles.

The outcome often associates the fabrics with more natural elements, including but not limited to, metal, branches, fragments of mirrors and much more. Tania uses her work to express her perception of modern society, often torn by conflict, but ultimately expressing a hope for dialogue and reconstruction. She effectively communicates these ideologies through her intensely contemporary approach.

The exhibition is part of a larger project by Stefania Grippo, interior designer and creator of ‘Piazzadispagna9’, a place where her talent as a designer meets that of her instinct of cultural inspiration. Since 2014 this experimental project unites art, design, craftsmanship and fashion.

The property boasts magnificent view of one of the most beautiful squares in Rome, and an exceptional  attention to interiors, all of which is enriched by a regular program of contemporary art. The artists are personally selected by Stefania Grippo, in line with the most modern international trends, in a two way exchange – filtered by their identity and their expressive research – between the imposing exterior and the internal space of the hotel.

‘Piazzadispagna9’ welcomes and inspires contemporary art . Therefore it should come as no surprise that in the 19th century the apartment was home to German artist Franz Catel, who insured the space was one of the most illustrious artistic salons of the Eternal City.

About Tania Welz

Born in Munich in Bavaria, Tania Welz has lived and worked in Rome for more than twenty years. Welz began her career as a painter, but soon realized that the two dimensional surface of the canvas limited her creativity. This realization pushed her to include sculptural elements in her work, but at the same time she wanted to avoid the plasticity associated with traditional sculpture.

Thus she began experimenting with a variety of materials and surfaces, transforming them into large abstract tapestries. Some of her most memorable exhibitions include: World Art Dubai, Showcasing winning artwork ‘All you can(not) leave behind’, 4 th International Emerging Artist Award 2016, Dubai, EAU; WIA Expo 2015 (Warsaw International Art), Varsavia, Polonia, 2015; 8th international fiber art biennale 2014, Nantong, China; Premio internazionale Limen arte 2011 Vibo Valentia, Italy, 2012; Festival internationale dell’arte, Embassy of Iraq, Roma, Italy, 2011; Opera Unica Rome, Italy, 2010; RvBArts Rome, Italy, 2010; Qibab Art Gallery Abu Dhabi, UAE 2010. Awards include: 2010, 25th Annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition selected by Juror Ms. Megan Fontanella, Assistent curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; 2016, 4th International Emerging Artist Award, Dubai, winner in the category of ‘mixed media’. Her works are included in the private collection of Dutch Railway Network Prorail.
