A comprehensive monograph celebrates the intense artistic career of the internationally-renowned sculptor

New York-based artist Joel Shapiro has executed more than thirty commissions and has been the subject of more than 160 solo exhibitions and retrospectives around the world. Shapiro’s sculptures, which can be found in major cities throughout Asia, Europe, and North America, explore geometric form through the structural composition of rectangular elements which visually and physically challenge conceptions of balance and weight.

This first comprehensive monograph, complete with 224 color illustrations, explores the work of one of the most prominent and influential sculptors of our time.

Born on September 27, 1941 in Queens, New York, Shapiro received both his BA and MA from New York University before traveling extensively during his service in the Peace Corps, most notably to India. Joel Shapiro is regularly exhibited at Pace Gallery in New York, and his work is held in such prestigious institutions as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Tate in London.

Richard Shiff is the Effie Marie Cain Regents Chair in Art at the University of Texas at Austin, where he directs the Center for the Study of Modernism.

His publications include Cézanne and the End of Impressionism (1984), Critical Terms for Art History (co-edited, 1996, 2003), Barnett Newman: A Catalogue Raisonné (co-authored, 2004), Doubt (2008), Between Sense and de Kooning (2011), and Ellsworth Kelly: New York Drawings 1954-1962 (2014).
