NATS, the UK’s leading provider of air navigation services, is to design and deliver a new, bespoke voice communications system at London Luton Airport, which is currently undergoing expansion.
Tailor-made by NATS’ service division, London Luton’s replacement Voice Communications and Control System (VCCS) will be installed as part of a £110m airport facelift that includes the building of a multi-storey car park and covered walkway, a new executive passenger lounge and extended shopping and dining facilities.
NATS’ future-proof solution is designed to facilitate the implementation of 8.33kHz spacing and ED-137B EUROCAE VoIP to enable interface connectivity with new systems in the future.
Delivered as a complete package comprising VCCS, radio, status monitoring and simulator systems repositioned at new sites and operated as part of an improved communications infrastructure, the NATS equipment provides a clear and effective solution capable of meeting London Luton’s current and future technical and safety requirements.
NATS Services Ltd has been engaged as designer and principal contractor by London Luton Airport Operations Ltd to deliver and project-manage its replacement VCCS and provide full testing, training, and safety management as required. NATS delivered London Luton’s existing communications systems in 2001.
David Healey, NATS General Manager Air Traffic Services at London Luton Airport, said:
“NATS is a natural fit to deliver these critical replacement systems with an eye to the future thanks to our dedicated UK-based engineering teams and extensive integration experience, as well as our track record of successful delivery across the UK. We are delighted to have been appointed to work with London Luton Airport on this project.”
Developed by NATS specialists to meet Luton’s stringent operational requirements, the design team was able to draw on the air traffic management group’s extensive experience as the expanding airport’s incumbent Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP).
NATS is a leading air navigation services specialist, handling 2.3 million flights in 2015/16, covering the UK and eastern North Atlantic. NATS provides air traffic control from centres at Swanwick, Hampshire and Prestwick, Ayrshire.
